01The challenge
To improve sustainability and recyclability, redesign packaging for a product currently encased in plastic by transitioning to renewable, recyclable paperboard. The new design should maintain durability while minimizing environmental impact, using features like interlocking tabs or biodegradable coatings for moisture resistance. Incorporate paperboard inserts or dividers to replace plastic components, ensuring functionality and ease of use. This streamlined approach reduces waste, lowers the carbon footprint, and meets the growing demand for eco-friendly packaging.
02Our solution
Our proposal replaces the plastic netting with decomposable pots made from 100% paperboard to reduce environmental impact. These pots, designed to deteriorate as the plant grows, address the issue of root binding caused by non-decomposable plastic materials. During the 1–2 weeks of germination before transplanting, these paperboard pots allow for proper growth. A unique tear-away bottom ensures the roots can grow freely when the plant is transferred, preventing root binding and promoting healthier development. This sustainable solution minimizes waste and supports eco-friendly practices.
